In Bruge...

Hi All

Greetings from Bruges Belgium! Even though it has started to sprinkle a little, this town is so cute!!! We have gotten our fill of waffles, crêpes and panini's....Today we also visited a flemish art museum and a chocolate museum! There was actually a movie made about Bruges with Colin Farrell and Ralph Finnes called "In Bruge" haha...check it out if you want to see where we are! Unlike the cute town, our bunk has some mysterious and vicious roommates....katie and sams ankles have been eaten alive by some kind of bug! So don't worry we will head to the pharmacy to pick up some benadryl and other stuff for our various ailments....

Amsterdam tomorrow for the last leg of our trip!

When in Rome....

Ciao!!!!

So our last day in Rome, and we really wish we weren't leaving Italy!! Yesterday we spent the day at the Vatican and saw some really cool stuff and visited St.Peters Basilica and San Pietro. We had a good lunch of pizza and anti pasto and headed off to another museum....well graveyard slash creepy place haha. I cant remember the name right now, but basically while digging up a church to build more they found 4000 bodies of monks and other royalty. ...but thats not it...they then took all the bones and made huge sculptures and designs out of them...sick. needless to say i was happy to walk out of there with all my bones intact! We came home for a short siesta and got ready for a night out in Rome...armed with Italian wine we had a good night in the city.

Today we visited the Colosseum and Palintine Hill. The Colosseum was by far our favorite part! It was huge and super cool to see that piece of Rome. Tonight we head to the Jewish Ghetto for dinner (don't worry it isn't the realll ghetto :) mmm cant wait!

Tomorrow we travel to Belgium....we are all a little sad to leave Italy though!

Glad to hear that everyone is ok from the quake! And p.s. UK hope you are feeling better, and that your surgery doesn't get in the way of your leopard swimsuit!

Ciao from Roma!

Well it is 1:15am and we are finally settled into our diggs in Rome! We had another long 2 days of travel and are exhausted! We BARELY made the last bus of the day to the port...literally running and begging to get on it! Then our ferry (which left at 11:30pm) took 3 hours longer, so by the time we got to the train station in Bari the train we were planning to take to Rome was full.... :( luckily after Katie's Italian we got a later train that arrived at 10:40 (and can I please tell you all that they had the NASTIEST NASTY NASTY food!!! haaha mayo and ham sandwich, heavy on the mayo)...by the time we got here the metro was closed so we decided to take a cab to our hostel, where we found a note from the owner saying to call him when we got here because we were supposed to be here at 6pm...haha after begging the nearest grocery / mini mart owners to let us use their phone, we got a hold of him and are settled in a place with only 4 other rooms! haha

Tomorrow we will go to the vatician early and see some sights around
Roma and maybe head out for the night. Wednesday we will see some more sights and try and get as much pizza and pasta in as possible before we head back to french fry land (belgium)....we LOVED the food in greece...but we will all puke if we eat another Gyro or Suvlaki plate anytime soon.

Thats all from rome tonight!

Ciao!!

p.s. mom and fam thanks for the pic! Hope you didnt have any fun without me ;)

ohhh the adventures we have had....

so last day at the pink palace and we are getting ready to head to the port to take our last ferry! (thank GOD)

We had a great time at the palace and did lots of things and made some great friends! Just a quick snap shot and i'll write more later (we have to catch a bus in 5)...we kayaked, snorkeled, rode ATV's around the island (yes and i didnt crash) went to a toga party, had plates broken over our heads, got 2nd place in a flip cup tourney, and got a reallly nice tan!

We made some good friends with some English guys from surrey (the town where the movie "the holiday" is set in, another 2 from Australia that kept singing California here we come every time we saw them, and a brother and sister from Germany.

All is all we are ready for a slower pace and not excited to take another ferry!

See you in Rome!!!

We're Alive!!

Hello! We have finally made it to Corfu!

First, if you didn't see it...a few posts down there is one about the hostels so far if you are interested and didn't see it. Second, we love reading the comments you write so keep them coming! :)

NOW...the last 2 days were quite possibly the longest and most exhausting of our lives. On the last day I wrote...Tues? (I have lost my sense of time) We took a crazy van ride down to the port in Santorini, waited a few hours for our boat and got aboard the 'Romilda' to Athens. This boat was a little different from our last one, and we found a spot on the floor of the deck. We thought we had picked a good spot but boy were we wrong! (my comma button just stopped working cool). we were surrounded by kids that were loud rude annoying and smoking packs upon packs of cigarettes...a few of us fell asleep for a little while but overall it was a horrendous ride! fifteen hours later and we arrived in Athens and trekked to the hostel where the bus would get us to drop off our stuff. i think it was probably THE hottest day in Athens too.

after finally getting rid of our bags we headed to the acropolis and the ancient Greek sites. if you didn't know the acropolis is HIGH on a hill in the middle of the city...so more fun climbing and walking. despite our sweatiness (i know gross but it is true) and tiredness we spent the day around the city and saw some really magnificent sights.

back to the hostel Aphrodite we waited for the pink palace bus...the bus ride took twelve hours and included another ferry ride with by far the best sleeping conditions we have had on a boat yet!

now we are here at the pink palace with an AMAZING room that is so clean and has a great view of the water! we had the best dinner last night which is included in the price of our room along with a decent breakfast. this place is great there are hundreds of twenty somethings here and lots of activities...today we are going kayaking and snorkeling and have a fun night ahead...tomorrow is a toga party :) haha one bummer is that the Internet costs two euros! haha so it might not be in the budget to come on again while we are here...but i am probably to addicted to not come on!

love neen

Last Full Day in Santorini....

We began today by grabbing some baked goods at the local 24 hour bakery and headed to "red beach". The sands were red from the cliffs, but we found the beach to be rocky and full of umbrellas that charged 7 Euros a seat....from there we headed back to Fira to see the Old port and cable cars down to the port. After a quick bite we trekked back to the car to hurry home to return it....our busy day yesterday made us a little slow today, so we did some laundry (yay!) and headed to the beach for awhile. Katie and I got a little lost on the way back, but after climbing a wall and almost getting attacked by 2 dogs we got home and went to the pool to cool off...we are headed to "God's Garden" for dinner...haha recommended by John of our hostel...we will see if the food is heavenly or not...;)

Tomorrow we get a 15 hour boat ride back to Athens....not looking forward to that. Then we can spend the day seeing the ancient ruins in Athens before heading to Hostel Aphrodite to catch the bus to the Pink Palace in Corfu. We might not be able to post until Wednesday or Thursday...depends on where we can find a computer.

Until then!

The Day We Rented A Car, Got Lost , and had the best day ever!

So it's safe to say that Greece is our favorite so far. The food, the sights, the weather and the people are all amazing.

Yesterday night we found a great place to eat on the beach a short walk from our pad. While searching for a place we were approached by a Scottish man who worked at Charlina (the restaurant) and we asked him what their happy hour was like....well the owner said free wine with dinner, and we were set. We had some really great dishes like lamb, mussels, pizza and pasticho, and some decent wine. It was right on the beach and we got a table right in the front. Later we went to a couple bars and ended up at a club the owner of Charlina recommended and danced the night away.

Now to the car (I know you are freaking out) haha....The Island is pretty small and easily navigable but you have to take a bus or car from one end to another and we wanted to see it...so for 30 euro we hopped into our Hyundai Getz (click for pic) and set off for Fira. The car was Great! We had a lot of room and it goes fast...and off road haha. After lunch of Lamb Pitas and a walk around the town we followed directions from a silly Albanian man that served us lunch to the beach....his directions consisted of "No left, no left, then a left" and a curvy motion with his hands...haha welll the road was different than expected and we ended up in a ravine with NOTHING around us but the Aegean Sea and some donkeys. Sam was an excellent driver and after thinking we were going to pop a tire going up some rocks we found a great black beach (no not the nude kind)

After our adventure off-roading, we headed for Oia for the sunset. If you have ever seen a picture of Greece or the Greek Islands, you probably have seen a pic of Oia. The houses and buildings are crammed on the tip of Santorini and are gorgeous! You can see the entire Sea practically and the sunset was great to look at from here. We had a good dinner overlooking the Sea and are now safely back in Perissa. Tomorrow we are exploring more beaches and getting our tan on!

That's all from Greece today!

Our Hostels....

So we have stayed at some interesting places so I thought I would share....

Amsterdam - Hostel Granada.....we might as well been staying in the Secret Annex of Anne Frank.....there were 5 or 6 torturous flights of stairs barely big enough for our backpacks. Our top floor room had its own bathroom / shower / toilet.....they were all in the same place with no separation....you could shower and pee at the same time if you wanted! (we didn't...at least I didn't..... haha) The common room was interesting, that's where we met Sam, our Aussie friend over PB&J sandwiches at Breakfast and Fabio, our Asian friend from Brazil (really his name is Fabio, and don't worry he already emailed Katie and Clare) Despite the gross bathrooms and kinda gross sheets, the location was good and we had fun.

Namur - Auberge de Jeunesse Félicien Rops .....Our hostel was nestled into the green hillside near the Citadel, just outside the center of Namur and right next to the Muse river. It was BEAUTIFUL! The hostel was very large and had tons of room. We shared a room with 2 other girls, but never saw them because they were at a wedding. The bathrooms were interesting with a shower inside of what seemed like a closet. We were only here a night and had to leave at 5:45am in order to catch our train!

Madrid - Student Hostel Luis Velez.....The building was located in Plaza Tisiro De Molina, right in the center of the city. We were happy to be here for a few nights and were able to hang our clothes and unpack a little. the bright colored room had four comfy beds and clean bathrooms down the hall. Unfortunately we were right on a busy road so it was very loud at night which made for some interesting dreams...haha. The people were nice...well all except "Francisco" as Katie deemed him, but spoke very little english.

Madrid - Cat's Hostel.......A switch from our private 4 bedroom at Luis Velez to a 10 person mixed dorm was interesting. We arrived with 2 roommates from Rochester New York, Mark and Jeremy. The comforters were a little old, and the room was cramped but the building was an old Spanish villa / house so it made things a little more interesting. There was a large common room (The Cat Cave), and a basement bar / Internet room / hangout. The beers were cheap and we met some really fun people here. This hostel really catered to the younger crowd and made sure there was plenty to do and people to meet. Despite one night having our beds swooped on by some Italian guys while we were out we had a great time here!

Santorini - John and Katerina Hotel....Close to the beach, our 4 bedroom hostel with a kitchen and bathroom has been good, even though Katie Sleeps on a pullout and Sam and I are sleeping on a bed that mysteriously broke in the middle of the night.

More updates as we continue on our journey!

Adios Madrid, Hellllo Greece!

Sorry I haven't posted in a few days, we have been busy traveling......

since we last met....

-we attempted to tour the royal palace, but failed because it was closed until Friday
-took a tapas tour that was kinda lame
-made friends with our high school roommates Jeremy and mark
-built a fort in our hostel dorm room
-visited the Museo del Prado (saw some works by Raphael and Goya and others, mostly naked religious paintings )
-ate paella (well Katie Sam and Clare did, i did not enjoy it haha)

Some of the highlights of Spain were definitely the food and people we met. We had a great time, especially at the Museo de Jarmon (Museum of Ham) haha....Katie especiallllllly loved it....

FINALLLLY we are in Greece after a flight to Athens, a metro ride to Piraeus Port, and a 12 hour (including waiting) boat ride to Santorini....

Our boat ride was long, and interesting we all slept on park benches on the outside deck (it was covered) and ate some DELICIOUS Gyros....thankfully we were met at the Port by John, the owner of the hostel we are at in Santorini. He reminds me of the dad "Gus" in my Big Fat Greek Wedding.

We headed straight to the beach, and back to the pool at our place. We have our own room with a kitchen and lots of room....more on the hostels later.

Did you know that Santorini has a Volcano in the middle of its port, and that the bay was created by a crater? Tomorrow we will explore the island more...

I will try and work on the pictures too! For now here is one I snagged from Google :)

Tapas and Cervesas

Hola Amigos!

Sorry for all the quick unorganized posts, usually someone is waiting for the computer so I am typing fast and not really thinking!

We went on a "free" walking tour today and saw ALOT of Madrid....we are REALLLY glad we did this because we have seen tons of places to visit and learned alot of history about the city and the country....

a few fun facts....

Madrid's mascot is the Female Bear, which you see all over the city and in its embalm as well as 7 stars, which are the constellation for the female bear....

Tapas, or the Spanish version of a hors´de ordurves originated by using the plate to cover the alcohol people were drinking

The rest of the week we will be exploring the city some more...museums, the palace, disco techs, and more!

ADIOS!

I Think We Will All Have The Nicest Calves After This Trip...

So our trip to Namur was surprisingly beautiful!!! The town was so cute and our hostel was right on a river! While eating dinner we were approached by a man in a tutu and wings with spray painted hair that we later found to be a part of a bachelor party and had an interesting encounter with him and his friends....haha After we got back to our hostel we discovered our flight to Madrid was MUCH earlier than we thought.....so we woke up at 5am this morning and discovered the buses weren't running for another 1HR so we would definitely miss our flight! we proceeded to walk 3km to the train station all with 30lb packs on our back! the walk turned into a mild sprint and we made it to the station just in time! thennnn we eventually arrived at the airport after waiting FOREVER for a bus to wait in more lines and running to our gate to catch the flight....

now in Madrid, the weather is HOT and we need to explore the city to find some activities...today is Sam´s b day so we will be celebrating tonight!

ADIOS!

Day 2..well actually day three

Guest writer..Clare (snaggle) (with input from neen)

It didn't rain today!

But first last night we went around Amsterdam on foot and saw some..not so attractive ladies in windows for sale...yikeessssssss.

FRIDAY

Well the day started off a little rough...PB&J sandwiches for breakfast and nastyyyyyy orange juice....(Clare liked the coffee). we met a new friend Sam from the land down under.

After mingling and planning the day we decided to rent bikes! yay! A few signatures later and we were off...well so we thought. Turns out Samantha can't ride a bike. after a half an hour of trying to teach her how to ride a bike we gave up and turned in our bikes and were off on foot.

with our Aussie friend and walking shoes ready we traveled along the Pirenschagsthsdsdsfsdfsdfsd canal towards Anne Frank Huis.

The self guided tour was very interesting and we got to see where the family lived and learned some interesting things.

Next we were off to the Heineken factory....or so we thought...after waiting for a tram and harassing a grocery store clerk we arrived at a CLOSED Heineken factory....so sad, well it turned out for the best when we found an EXCELLLENT place to eat lunch and people watch. After lunch we headed to a street fair, which was alot like the orange county swap meet... a walk through a beautiful park and shopping area brought us home for a nice nap :)

Tonight we are partaking in a 18 Euro Pub Crawl throughout the Canal Ring. haha more on that next time

Tomorrow we head to Namur to enjoy "hiking biking (well not anymore) caving and kayaking" according to my guide book haha....probably just More walking!

Cheers!
